about

When I was advance man for Billy Smart's Circus, one of my jobs was to recruit casual labourers to help put up the big top. The musical inspiration was the dissonant bells in Benjamin Britten's Sunday Morning prelude to the opera Peter Grimes. I obtained the sound by moving the Emajor guitar chord up two frets. A.L.Lloyd chose it as the best song in the "Songs of the Seventies" book published by the WMA (though it was from the late 50s). Bill Leader tried to interest Leon Rosselson in recording it with the 3 City 4 group he was leading at the time.
